I remember, with nostalgia, Prof. Wangari Maathai’s visit to St Cloud State University in January 2007. I was honored to introduce her to the audience in one of the record-breaking attended event in the history of SCSU. In my short speech, I stated how honored we were as a university to have had with us that night, “ a thinker, a scholar, a professional, a scientist, an international activist, a fighter, a feminist, and a world leader. The tree hugger, the tree woman, the beacon of light, the voice of courage, the voice of dissent as well as the voice of inspiration and hope, the green warrior. Today, as we mourn Professor Wangari Maathai, we also know that her spririt lives on in the hearts and minds of those she profoundly touched.

Much of Kenya, including the Central Highlands, is recovering from several consecutive years of a severe drought/famine cycle due to lack of rainfall, crop failure and livestock losses caused by under-production and starvation. Ngatha International Childrens Homestead & Learning Center is struggling to feed & sustain its orphans and students. Costs for food & supplies have increased nearly 130%. The local government has enforced water rationing and has banned any irrigation along Pesi river (which flows thru the Ngatha property).

100% of all donations to Ngatha’s Emergency Food Relief Fund will go directly to the Children’s Homestead & Learning Center, in Ngamini Village.

Thank you for your prayers and generosity.

he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed. – Proverbs 11:24-25

The first fundraiser on behalf of the Chad Boeckers Memorial/NGATHA Ngamini Medical Center was well attended and most certainly enjoyed by all.

The event began with a one hour swing dance lesson. During the rest of the evening, whether sitting, standing, or twirling around the floor, attendees grooved to the polished sounds of Jazz.Combo, which showcased lots of wonderful local talent.

Jan Boeckers shared her story of a family’s deep loss and a path to healing. NGATHA International founder, Mumbi Mwangi also reflected to the group, her arrival to the United States, experiencing her first snowstorm and the creation of NGATHA International, borne of the deep calling she felt to do her part in helping to restore hope and dignity to Africa’s women and children.

Jewelry designers, Njeri Clement and Sam Scales-Arnold set up picture perfect displays of their wares. Board members, Beth Lewis and TJ Parsons were in attendance to represent NGATHA International and meet some of the passionate people behind the Chad Boeckers Memorial/NGATHA Ngamini Medical Center Project, including, but not limited to, Josie Mattson, Sam Scales-Arnold, Ralph and Jan Boeckers and some of their children. The Ngamini Swing model couple were also there, looking as lovely on the dance floor as they did in the Ngamini Swing poster!

Thank you to all who attended, volunteers and planners of the event, which raised $2817.00!!!

Tammi Joy Parsons spent the morning of November 8th with many bright and thoughtful Sunday School children and teachers at Mamrelund Luther Church in Pennock, MN. Earlier in the year, the children raised $250.00 on behalf of the Ngatha International Childrens Homestead & Learning Cente, which will be used for the purchase of chickens at the homestead.

Parsons met with the children and told them about NGATHA and her experiences with the orphans when she visits the program in Kenya. They students were able to see lots of photographs and ask questions, such as what the orphans do for electricity? . . . do they have candles? . . . what does goat meat taste like? .. . . what happened to the children’s parents? . . . what do they sleep on for a bed?

Mamrelund Lutheran Sunday School has chosen NGATHA again to raise funds, this time for goats.
